Ministry's pilot project increased schoolchildren's hobbies in Finland

The Finnish Hobby Pilot Model aims to support the well-being of children and young people by arranging free hobbies for every child and young person during the school day. The range of hobbies is chosen according to the wishes of the children and young people.

In the autumn, the Finnish Hobby Pilot Model's hobby groups reached about a quarter of Finnish comprehensive schoolchildren. The results were published in December 2024.

The Ministry grants approximately 14 million euros in grants to municipalities annually to organize hobby groups. There are a total of 511,000 basic education students in the 258 municipalities receiving state grants, of which 143,000 participate in Finnish Hobby Model hobby groups, according to the municipalities' estimates.

Only about 40 percent of those living in single-parent families had a hobby outside of the school day. More than half of children living with two parents had hobbies outside of the school day.

According to the Minister, popular hobbies among children include cooking groups. Schoolchildren have also been interested in parkour.

According to the Ministry, the model has reached enthusiasts from various family backgrounds exceptionally well.

Most of the participants in the project came from families without socioeconomic risk factors, such as low parental education or low income. However, more than a fifth of the participants had at least one such risk factor. 12 percent of the participants had more than one socioeconomic risk factor.

The most important reason for participation for low-income families was that the project was free of charge. In families other than low-income families, the opportunity to do a hobby during the school day was again emphasized as a reason for participation.

In the 2024-2025 school year, activities are planned to be organized for basic education students in 258 municipalities. In the pilot project, which will last the entire school year, information will be collected directly from the guardians of enthusiasts.
