Goodwill
Goodwill refers to the excess value of a business that is not directly related to the tangible assets of the business. It can arise, for example, in mergers and acquisitions, when the purchase price of the acquired company exceeds its net assets as stated in the balance sheet. Goodwill can consist of many factors, such as the company's reputation, customer relationships, personnel skills, brands or other intellectual property rights. It therefore represents a value that will help the company generate profits in the future. In accounting, goodwill is capitalized on the balance sheet and is reduced by depreciation over time. The depreciation period and methods may vary from country to country and depend on local accounting rules.
